If somebody would approach me few months ago and tell me that I would participate in a fun run, I would think that the person is just kidding. I have friends who invite me to participate in marathon from time to time, however, I would often dismiss their invitation since I thought that those are for ‘sporty’ people and I am not the ‘sporty type’. Yes, I play badminton and volleyball with some friends once in a while but just for fun. I run once in a while for exercise but not because I want to participate in a marathon.
When I was invited to join the “Takbo Para sa Kaalaman, Kalusugan, at Kalikasan”, I didn’t know what came into my mind that made me say “yes”. I realized that I only have 2 days left before the run. Since I already have scheduled activities for those days, I was not able to prepare myself physically.
The time to run came. A lot of runners assembled themselves along CCP Complex. Media people who were covering the event were walking to and fro. Organizers are busy bugs as they make sure everything is in place.
We were asked to assemble. I took a deep breath and waited for the gun fire as I started to stride. Half-way through the run I felt so tired. Good thing that organizers positioned a water station along the way – an oasis! After my thirst was quenched, I continued until I reached the finish line. Running is tiring yet invigorating!
As I savor the wonderful feeling of finishing my first run, a friend distracted me and said, “Audrey, you finished your first run! Join us in the next!” I laughed as I tried to catch my breath but I said “Yes, let us register for the next run!”. Funny as it seems, this experience gave me a different perspective in running.
I met the youngest runner for that specific event. Her name is Princess. Her Dad told me that she started running when she was four years old. The first time she joined a competition, she was registered to run 1 kilometer. However, along the way, she joined the adults up to the 5-kilometer race and finished third place! Imagine! Isn’t that inspiring?
I had breakfast with Princess together with her parents after the run. She fondly recalled the media interview that she had earlier after she crossed the finish line. She asked me to watch her on TV.
A day after my first run, reality sets in – feeling of soreness was already present. I used to experience this kind of soreness after a Tae-bo session which I have not done for months. I somehow miss this feeling of soreness. Hahaha!
When I checked my twitter earlier, I saw a tweet from a renowned Triathlete, Maricel Laxa-Pangilinan! Her message is so motivating!
