February 9, 2019 was a normal weekend for me and my family – or maybe, that was what I thought it would be. Little did I know that everyone has been working on something special to surprise me that night.
Few weeks ago, Paolo informed me of a family event to be held in one of the hotels in Manila. We’ve been attending family events for quite some time already so this dinner is not something that raised my radar. The attire for the event is semi-formal and the motif is something white or light.
Whenever I would go to an event, I would pull a number of dresses from my closet and ask my mom to choose what she likes. This time, she chose a dainty white dress. As soon as I finished dressing up, Pao was already outside our gate to pick me up.
The dinner will start at 7:00p.m. Thankfully, the traffic cooperated and we arrived Manila in 40 minutes. Since we still have extra time to spare, we passed by the Mall of Asia so I can quickly go to a salon to blow dry my hair. After having my hair done, Pao told me that Migz, his brother, will ride with us because he needs to change his attire to follow the motif. We went to Harbour Square and waited for Migz. After we parked, Pao suggested that we walk around the area and check if we could grab something to snack on before heading to the hotel. I noticed that Pao wore his coat. He told me “I am feeling cold”. I laughed and reacted “Huh? I don’t feel cold.” It was later that night when I found out that he did that to cover the bulge on his pocket where he kept the ring.
We walked towards the bay area. We saw Starbucks but there were no available tables. We walked around and around. I asked him “bakit paikot-ikot tayo?” He answered, “let us just enjoy the view” (later that night he told me that he was looking for the area where the speed boat will park). After few minutes, a lady approached us and said “Ma’am, we would like to invite you to a free boat ride”. Before I could process why is there a free boat ride, Pao immediately answered, “Sure! Let’s try it!”. Upon boarding the speed boat, I noticed that there were photographers. One of them shouted, “smile!” and clicked on his camera to take a photo of us. I reasoned out, “Ah, baka pipicturan kami tapos bibilhin namin yung mga pictures – parang sa Luneta!”
Then I noticed na parang ang layo na namin pero di pa umiikot yung speedboat pabalik. Then Pao pointed to the middle of the ocean and said, “Uy may yacht oh!”. The one driving the speedboat answered, “Sige, ikutan natin”.
When we got near the yacht, I noticed that there was a table setting for two.
Then the attendant said, “Welcome to MY SELENA”, I stared at her figuring out what she meant. (Later that night, I found out that ‘My Selena’ is the name of the yacht) She smiled and said, “Akyat na po tayo sa yacht Ma’am”. I looked at Pao and he was wearing his poker face. I asked “Bakit? Papano si Migz?” Pao said, “Dito tayo mag-dinner” I asked “Eh papano yung dinner sa hotel?” A lot of things were going through my mind as I heard the song “Can’t Help Falling in Love” playing. We boarded the yacht and I immediately noticed the red and white rose petals scattered on the floor. The ambiance is just so romantic!
When I saw the beautiful set-up, I asked Pao, “What is this?” He answered, “Just enjoy the night”
When we were ushered to our chairs. I asked Pao, “Bakit ako kinakabahan?” He told me to just enjoy the night. The attendant then gave us our drinks and our appetizers.
We started talking while we were waiting for the food but in my mind, I was asking myself, “Will he propose tonight? But my parents are not here. Do they know? Since they did not mention anything to me, maybe this is just a special dinner. But what is the occasion?” Those questions kept popping in my mind again and again.
Then I heard a voice that cut-off the discussions in my mind. It was the attendant. She was smiling as she said, “Sir, Ma’am, I would like to invite you to watch the fireworks display”. We then went to the other side of the yacht.
We admired the fireworks for few minutes while talking about random things. Then out of nowhere, I told him “Kung nandito lang si mommy sasabihin nun, hindi siya mahilig sa fireworks”. Pao said “Be careful on what you wish for kasi baka magkatotoo or baka naririnig ka na nya ngayon”. I was bewildered by his statement. When I looked at Pao, he was motioning for me to look around. When I did, I saw our families. I saw mommy, daddy, and my brothers – they were all smiling. I also saw her mom, siblings and aunts! Without my knowledge, our families were hiding in the rooms inside the yacht! I bursted into tears as I ran towards my parents. I hugged them tightly as tears flow from my eyes. My mom whispered to me, “Always remember, mahal na mahal ka namin”
Iyak… Tawa… Iyak… That’s what I did. I did not know that it is possible to laugh and cry hard at the same time! Hahaha!
Then Pao ushered me to the center of the yacht. In front of our families, he made a speech which is really sincere and sweet at the same time. He knelt as he pulled out the ring. Looking to my eyes he asked me if I could spend the rest of my life with him. I was so happy because I know that he is the one for me, with the happiness emanating from my heart, I answered “of course!”.
After he placed the beautiful diamond ring (which he had been keeping since last year) on my finger, we hugged our families. It was truly an answered prayer! I was so happy that night because everybody was happy and rejoicing with us!
To celebrate the engagement, we all went to the party area of the yacht where the sumptuous meal is waiting for us.
It was during this dinner when I found out that Pao’s family has been planning the engagement for months. I felt so loved by my future in laws!
I am blessed to have Pao in my life. He is not just my best friend and confidant, he also encourages me to improve and strive to achieve my full potential.
It is such a blessing to have both our families celebrate our love. I am so happy and grateful!
It was such a happy night when the people closest to us gave their blessings as we embark on another stage of our lives. Before sleeping that night, I praise God in prayer, thanking Him for all the blessings that He showered me with. Truly, when you let God write your love story, He will give you the best love story that He wants you to have.
